Hello 2012

Well. it's been a while hasn't it.

Been busy with work and kids and I haven't had time to do anything for my self for ages.

Was watching the last Harry Potter film the other day though and the end just feels weird to me. Who is Harry as a grown up? what's he doing with his life? is he an accountant? does he live of his fame, or is he an Auror as he trained to be?

This is just a quick mess around of Harry as a late 20 something Auror adventurer. He's wearing a standard, Ministry of Magic issued stun proof vest and he's magically hi-lighted his scar as a warning to potential enemies.

I know the anatomy is a little loose but hey, I feel like like I haven't drawn in a year :)

I decided to have a crack at drawing Orko from the MOTU as i'd never done it before. It started off as a warm up sketch and i got a little carried away :)
It took about 4 hours from pencil sketch to finished painting.

Things have been rather hectic recently to say the least. So today is going to be post overload to make up for it :)

First up, the next in my series of He-man fan art challenges. This guy is Scrollos, a kind of mystical 'watcher' from the old comics who keeps track of all the goings on of Eternia. I've kind of reimagined him as Adam who's come back from the future to watch and preserve the timeline he fought for. The costume is made up of elements of other Masters such as Man at arms, Teela and Orko, as well as incorporating other characters such as he-man, Skeletor, Triklops and others.

In the comic his face was never shown and i've interpreted this with a kind of eternal shadow. The star field represents the depth of his knowledge.

Another of the character re-design challenges. This one from the she-ra universe, tried to make it a quick one. Think it took about 2 hours all in so not too bad :)

Reasonably pleased with this, think the likeness is good, but as it's basically copied from the original poster art, i can't claim any kudos on the lighting. Still, it was good painting practice and I do like the final piece :)

This is the latest page from a comic that i've been working on with a couple of friends for about... er... too long. I took an extended hiatus to work on some other stuff but I need sequential practice so I'm back on it. The multiple zombie frame at the end I found quite satisfying. Good for practicing perspective. I had my wifes HEAT magazine next to me at the time so there are very subtle cameos from Jordan, Peter Andre and Kerry Catona among others :)

I'm getting ready to take some commisions... i'm very poor and I haven't really done this for a while so I thought I'd better practice. So this is a full illustration on Bristol using a Pentel brush pen, coloured with felt tips and colouring pencils.
Going for a pin-up feel.

Quick one. I love Iron fist. I started a sketch yesterday with the intention of drawing Danny, then about half way through (and on the third attempt... i was having a sucky-drawing day) I decided to create an Iron fist variant based on the White Crane uniform (the style I practice).
I quite like it :) the inking went horribly wrong so I stripped most of it out and just created forms with shadows, which i think works fine.

So yeah, think i'm going to do a few more of these to practice some action poses.

Another He-man one :) This time a redesign of an unreleased He-man mount, A golden gorilla called Gygor. I couldn't imagine Anyone riding on the back of a golden gorilla (maybe a tarzan type character... that might be something to think about) so I made it as a stridor inspired mech suit.
Took a bit too long... but it's done now.

As a proud member of the comic geek speak community, I always take part in the annual 'secret santa sketch exchange'. Usually people just knock out pencil or Ink sketches but as more and more artists join the community, a little level of competition has begun to creep in. Hence me trying to paint for the first time in almost a decade. Quite pleased with it actually, hope I get better with practice though.
So here is Rocket Raccoon, Acrylic on card. It looks better in the flesh I think.

Another slightly old one... but it's just been printed in SFX magazine and the happy buzz has prompted me to post it :)

actually the printed article has nothing to do with me, it's a review of the website/ podcast of a couple of friends of mine over at www.geeksyndicate.co.uk and includes a teeny-tiny picture of the banner I drew for them. Still... i'm claiming that.

A friend and I are working on a potential comic/ series using these characters (Rosencrantz and Guildenstern). I originally tried to base them off Gary Oldman and Tim Roth (who played the respective roles in the movie) But i just couldn't get Oldman down. So now Rosencrantz is me :) much easier. I think i'll try to simplify/ stylise this for the final project but this was just an exercise really.

Just a quicky for the fan-art challenge on the CGS comic forums. The brief was to update Green Lanterns costume for the silver screen. I ditched the spandex, cos although I love it i can never see it working, and based it more on his airforce background, throwing in a little motor cycle jacket as well. Think if I have another crack i'll lose the GL logo on the shoulders and make the logo just float in front of his chest, glowing slightly.
All digital by the way, starting in painter using the pencil tool. It's not bad... can't wait to get a cintiq though. one day...

I tried to be fancy with this one... not a clever idea. I worked completely digitaly and wanted to treat it like a proper painting, all one layer, no fancy effects... Then i realized it was taking too long... and then i got a bit disheartened... I still quite like it, but you can tell how i start to rush it and skip definition as I moved down the piece. Ah well.
Quite like the colours though :)

Mimes pin-up

Some good friends of mine have just released their first comic. It's called Mimes and it's a great looking, all ages book about a super powered (sort of) Mime troupe.

Spicy Space Tales...

So... I also contribute (well once anyway) to a communal comic called 'Spicy space tales'. It's an ongoing project in which each consequtive page is drawn, inked, coloured and lettered by a single entity, after which another artist takes up the reigns and continues the story, improvising the plot as they go. Much hilarity insues. Especially if like me you are not a good writer.

This is the page I did, took me about 2 days all in, so obviously not a sketch. But I thought it would be nice to post something :)

Spent too much time on the sketching side of this one. Should have been a lot quicker. It's not intentional but Cap kinda looks like the guy who played him in the movie. A little maybe anyway.

Another birthday sketch. I'm trying to be less precious with my work at the moment. This time that equates to me scribbling all over the page with a sharpie.

I hate inking, but this one almost worked. Think i just got a little carried away.

Colours are super loose this time as well but i think it came out okay.

Well. Here goes post number one. No promises on when number two will turn up.
I'm going to do my best to update this at least weekly (i can do a piece a week surely...) but we'll see how it goes.

First up, a warm up sketch based on a friend of mines D&D character. I say warm up, took be a good couple of hours. Think i need to speed up a little.
